What if the rain were an opportunity to discover Lake Geneva from a different angle? From the fine sandy beach at Excenevex, Camping le Léman Plage offers the perfect base from which to explore the Bas-Chablais and neighbouring Switzerland without getting wet.
From historic sites to wellness breaks and cultural outings all within 45 minutes, here is our local selection to turn a grey day into a memorable experience.
The ‘Culture & Curiosities’ option (just a stone’s throw away)1. The ‘Culture & Curiosities’ option (just a stone’s throw away)
You don’t have to go far to learn something new whilst staying dry. The region is full of unusual museums.
- Ripaille Castle (Thonon) – 15 mins away: Even closer to you! Although the gardens are under water, the interior of this former residence of the Dukes of Savoy is a marvel. Here you can explore the medieval kitchens and learn about local history.
- A little extra: The estate produces its own wine. A tasting of the Ripaille white is the perfect remedy for a grey day!
- Sciez’s hidden gems – 10 mins away: Just a few minutes from the campsite, the village of Sciez is home to two perfect mountain refuges:
- The Museum of Prehistory and Geology: To learn about the formation of the Alps and the era of the lake dwellings. Visually engaging and fascinating for children.
- The Fire Brigade Museum: A huge indoor exhibition space housing an impressive collection of vintage fire engines. A paradise for young (and old) fans of red fire engines.
Geneva: The border city (35 mins)

Make the most of your proximity to the border for a city break. Geneva is a real treasure trove of museums, many of which offer free entry to their permanent collections.
- Natural History Museum: Huge galleries featuring life-size dinosaurs and animals. It’s the favourite ‘holiday saviour’ activity for families around Lake Geneva.
- Quartier des Bains: For lovers of contemporary art, this neighbourhood is brimming with galleries and museums (such as the MAMCO), offering a cosy artistic experience.

As the lake is a bit chilly in the rain, head to the local water parks for a swim in comfort.
- Cité de l’Eau (Publish) – 20 mins away: Located closer to Excenevex, this centre features heated indoor pools, water slides and a spa area for parents. Ideal for children to let off steam.
- Evian Aquatic Centre – 25 mins away: Another well-equipped complex where you can switch between competitive swimming and leisurely fun.
- Vitam Parc (Neydens) – 45 mins away: It’s a bit of a drive, but it’s the ultimate destination for indoor fun: a huge water park, a climbing centre and shops, all under one roof.

Sometimes, the best plan is to do nothing at all. The rain on the banks of the Excenevex has a uniquely soothing quality.
- Relaxing on the terrace: Our accommodation features covered terraces. Reading a book to the sound of raindrops on the roof, whilst keeping an eye on the lake – that’s what holidays are all about.
- A friendly atmosphere and a chance to socialise: Make the most of the campsite’s communal areas to organise a board game tournament or chat to the team about the weather forecast (we’ve always got a great tip for the next day!).
- Wi-Fi included: Perfect for planning your next bike ride or watching a film in the comfort of your mobile home.
FAQ: Your questions on ‘Bad Weather’
- Do you need a motorway toll sticker to get to Geneva? No, not if you avoid the motorway. From Excenevex, follow the country road that runs alongside the lake: it’s a lovely route and you’ll arrive right in the city centre for free!
- What should I do with my dog if it rains? If the museums are closed, a walk in the Ripaille Forest near Thonon offers good shelter under the tall trees. Once back at the campsite, a quick dry-off and he can rest in the dry with you.
- Is there a cinema nearby? Yes, in Thonon-les-Bains (15–20 mins away), you’ll find a modern cinema and a bowling alley for fun evenings out with family or friends.
The rain passes, but the memories remain
In Haute-Savoie, the weather changes quickly: a morning shower often gives way to a sunny afternoon on the lake shore. Whilst you wait for the clouds to clear so you can return to the fine sand of Excenevex, these alternatives allow you to discover an authentic, culinary and cultural side of the Chablais, far off the beaten track.
